Location : Fayetteville Public Library

Salary Range: $104,400.00 - $130,500.00

The Director of Communications oversees the library’s external and internal communications, public relations, branding, and promotional efforts. This role is responsible for developing and executing effective marketing strategies that connect the public with Fayetteville Public Library’s services, programs, and resources.

Working in collaboration with staff across departments, this role ensures that communications are clear, consistent, and aligned with the library’s mission and goals. The Director manages messaging across digital and print platforms, supervises communications of staff, and coordinates outreach strategies to broaden awareness and engagement within the community.

This is a hands-on, strategy-oriented position requiring strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to balance planning and execution.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Lead the development and execution of an annual marketing and communications plan that supports the library’s strategic objectives and outreach priorities.
  2. Oversee content creation for the library’s website, print materials, email newsletters, signage, advertising, and social media platforms.
  3. Coordinate marketing campaigns for programs, services, and special initiatives across multiple channels, ensuring accessibility and consistency.
  4. Manage the library’s brand identity, including logo usage, voice and tone, and graphic standards across all public-facing materials.
  5. Assist the Executive Director in developing strategic communications for the Board of Trustees, staff and community.
  6. Collaborate with departments to understand their goals and develop effective promotional strategies and timelines.
  7. Plan and implement audience research and engagement tracking, using data to inform communications strategies and evaluate outcomes.
  8. Supervise communications and marketing staff, including hiring, training, scheduling, and performance evaluation.
  9. Maintain and monitor the library’s website and social media presence, ensuring content is current, user-friendly, and visually appealing.
  10. Coordinate media and public relations efforts, including writing press releases and responding to local media inquiries, in alignment with leadership guidance.
  11. Support internal communications, including developing templates, toolkits, and updates that ensure staff are informed and aligned with library messaging.
  12. Work with the development team to support donor communications, sponsorship promotion, and foundation messaging.
  13. Stay current on marketing tools, design trends, and community engagement strategies; recommend and implement new approaches where appropriate.
  14. Manage the department budget and marketing calendar, ensuring efficient use of resources and timely production of materials.
  15. Serve as part of the management team to provide input on organization-wide initiatives and service improvements.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, journalism, public administration, or a related field required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in marketing, communications, public relations or public information.
  • At least 2 years of supervisory experience preferred.
  • Experience developing and executing multi-channel marketing plans.
  • Familiarity with brand management and digital communications best practices.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong writing and editing skills for various audiences and formats.
  • Comfortable with content planning, project timelines, and cross-team collaboration.
  • Proficient with tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, CMS platforms, and social media schedulers.
  • Ability to evaluate communication efforts using analytics and feedback.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time management skills.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & REQUIREMENTS

  • Standard office environment.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to work evenings or weekends for events or urgent communications needs.
  • Multilingual skills a plus.
